Help & Support
Grist is made by Shotdrum Studios, LLC · Last updated August 31, 2026
Grist is a small, independent app, which means when you email support you're writing to the people who actually build it. Start with the questions below — most issues are covered here. If yours isn't, we'd genuinely like to hear about it.
We answer every message, usually within one business day. Include your device, your Grist version, and what you were doing when things went sideways — it saves a round trip.

Getting started
How do I create an account?
Go to web.gristbrew.app and sign in with Apple, Google, or your email address. There's no separate sign-up step — the first time you sign in, your account is created. Grist is free while it's in beta.
If you'd rather start on iPhone, iPad, or Mac, you don't need the website at all. Join the beta through TestFlight, install Grist, and sign in there instead — it creates the same account the same way. Either path gets you to the same place, so pick whichever you'll actually brew with, and sign in on the other one later if you want it.
Which platforms can I use?
Grist runs in any modern browser, and natively on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The Apple apps are currently distributed through TestFlight while we're in beta. Your account and data are the same everywhere.
Do I have to use the app to use the website?
No. The web app is complete on its own. Use one, use both — everything syncs.
Sign-in & accounts
I signed in with Apple before, and now I'm using Google. Did I lose my data?
No, as long as both sign-in methods use the same verified email address. Grist links them to a single account automatically. If you used Apple's Hide My Email option, Apple gives us a private relay address rather than your real one, so that sign-in can't be matched to a Google or email sign-in on your actual address. If you're staring at an empty account that should have batches in it, stop and email us before entering more data — we can sort out which account is which.
My email sign-in code never arrived.
Check spam, and give it a couple of minutes. Codes expire, so request a fresh one rather than reusing an old email. If nothing lands after a second attempt, email us from the address you're trying to use.
How do I change the email on my account?
Email us and we'll take care of it. Because your email is how sign-in methods get matched to each other, we'd rather do this by hand than let it quietly split your account in two.
Sync & devices
My changes aren't showing up on my other device.
Grist syncs in the background whenever the app is open and online. First, confirm both devices are signed in to the same account — check the email shown in Settings. Then make sure the device that has the missing change has been open and connected since you made it; edits made offline are queued and sent on the next connection. Reopening the app forces a sync.
I edited the same batch on two devices at once. Which one wins?
The most recent edit to a given field wins. Grist syncs field by field rather than replacing whole records, so two devices editing different parts of the same batch will both be preserved.
Can I use Grist offline?
The Apple apps work offline — you can log a gravity reading in a cold garage with no signal and it'll sync when you're back. The web app needs a connection.
Grist Pro & billing
What does Grist cost?
Grist is free during the beta. Grist Pro is our paid tier; if you subscribe, the current price and billing period are shown before you confirm.
How do I cancel?
It depends on where you subscribed:
- Subscribed in the iPhone, iPad, or Mac app? Apple handles the billing. Cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your device. We can't cancel or refund an Apple subscription for you — Apple doesn't give us that ability.
- Subscribed on the web? Manage or cancel it from Settings in the web app, or email us and we'll send you a billing portal link.
Cancelling stops the next renewal. You keep Pro through the end of the period you already paid for.
I need a receipt.
Apple emails receipts for App Store purchases, and they're also in your Apple purchase history. For web subscriptions, receipts come from our payment processor to the email on your account — email us if you can't find one.
I was charged and something's wrong.
Email us with the date and amount. If it's an Apple purchase we'll help you figure out what happened, though refunds for App Store purchases have to go through Apple.
Integrations
Brewfather and Brewer's Friend
You can import recipes from Brewfather and Brewer's Friend by connecting your account in Grist's settings. These connections are entirely optional and off until you turn them on. If an import fails, send us the recipe you were trying to bring over — malformed or unusual recipe data is usually the culprit, and it helps us fix it for everyone.
Google Sheets
Grist can pull your MHP progress from a Google Sheet you own. You grant access through Google's own consent screen, and you can revoke it at any time from your Google account's security settings.
The connection is read-only and one-way. Grist reads the sheet you point it at and never writes to it, so nothing you do in Grist will change, reorder, or overwrite your spreadsheet — keep editing it however you already do. Grist also can't see anything else in your Drive.
Sight and AI features
Sight answers questions about your brewing using your own data as context. It's assistive, not authoritative — treat it like a knowledgeable friend rather than a lab. Don't rely on it for food-safety, health, or competition-rules decisions. If it gets something meaningfully wrong, we want to see it; send us the question and the answer.
Deleting your account
You can delete your Grist account and all of the data in it yourself, at any time, from Settings in the app or the web app. No email, no support ticket, no waiting on us. Deletion is permanent and takes your recipes, batches, and readings with it. If you want a copy of anything first, email us before you delete — once it's gone we can't get it back.
One thing deletion does not do: cancel a subscription billed through Apple. Cancel that in your Apple ID subscription settings, or it will keep renewing. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what's removed and when.
Reporting a bug or requesting a feature
Grist is in beta and we'd rather hear about a rough edge than have you work around it quietly. A useful bug report includes:
- What you expected to happen, and what happened instead
- The device and OS (for example, "iPhone 15, iOS 26" or "Chrome on Windows")
- Roughly when it happened — it helps us find the matching diagnostic report
- A screenshot, if there's anything to see
Feature requests are welcome and genuinely read. If you're a brewer who wants Grist to do something it doesn't, that's the most useful email we get.
Getting your data out
Your brewing data is yours, and you're entitled to a copy of it. Email us and we'll put together a machine-readable export of everything on your account. Self-serve export is on our list — until it ships, we do it by hand, and we don't drag our feet about it.
Still stuck?
Write to us. A person reads it.
